BRIEF HISTORIES of VIETNAM:

Precursor 1:
Visitors to present-day Vietnam bring their versions of Vietnam’s history with them.
It often includes iconic photographic images of a brief moment called the Vietnam War,
or the America War.
Some visitors recall that the French were in Vietnam before the Americans.
None of that made the ‘S’ shaped country, which today is called Vietnam.

Precursor 2:
Humans learn from simple to complex.
This important period of history is very complex.
I will try my best to make it more understandable
by simplifying it, and making it brief.

Precursor 3:
Historians warn against writing brief histories.
As far as I am concerned, all histories are brief. They have to be.
I do not have 30 years to discuss the 30 year Monsoon Wars.
See the flaw.

I will supply the same story in a variety of ways, moving from simple to complex.
I hope you enjoy it (them).

Here is the first telling of the story. It is a very, very brief history.
In "Vietnam: ancestors and ATMs" I needed a very, very brief description of Vietnamese history. Here it is. "
Once upon a time, not so long ago, Vietnam was not the ‘S’ shaped country it is today.
It wasn’t even called Vietnam then.
The Viet people lived on the Red River delta, near present day Hanoi,
in a country called Dia Viet.
This brief history is about how the ‘S’ shaped country was formed.

The making of Vietnam was a slow, painful and bloody process.
The history of this period can be confusing to say the least.
(I will use my teacher skills to try to make it a little more understandable.)

The Viets and Chinese knew that the most fertile rice-growing region in the world was along the Mekong and Saigon River deltas.
Perfect soil, constant weather, and subterranean water, meant FOUR RICE CROPS PER YEAR.
The Viets and Chinese were migrating southward into what was then Cambodian territory
by the tens of thousands.
By the early 1620s there were so many Viets in the southern deltas, that the Dai Viet Emperor realized that he was missing out on collecting an enormous amount of tax revenue from his subjects.
The Emperor received permission from the Cambodian King to set two tax collection houses, to tax the Viets in the fertile area. One house house was in Saigon, and the other may have been closer to the coast in Baria.
