MY BOOKS
It seems people are always asking me how my writing is getting on.
I have decided to dedicate one page of my history website to my books.
I have written many educational linguistics books.
But educational linguistics is no where near as exciting as history and culture
(in fact it is exactly opposite to exciting),
so let's by-pass those.

My Vietnam Stories: coming to grips with living in this exotic country.
by Paul Rowe
by Paul Rowe
My Vietnam Stories was written for a niche market. Almost a captive market. It was written for guests who booked in and participated in one of my Vung Tau based tours.
Guests always seemed to want more information, more stories. So I wrote a book of eleven short stories specifically for them. All stories had some connection to Vung Tau, Vietnam. Many of the stories were expansions of bits and pieces that I mentioned on the tour.
I wanted this book to be a very simple read,
because Vietnamese history and culture can be very complicated.
It turns out that My Vietnam Stories is the ideal starting point, if you wish to learn about a country and culture that is complex and usually misrepresented in English language books.
READ THIS BOOK FIRST.
It has been very well received over the years.
.....................
I must mention that my eldest daughter, Rachel, inspired me to write this book. I admit I had twice before attempted to write a book about Vietnam, and they ended up in the bin.
Rachel suggested to compile a book of my short stories. She said I was always telling some story or another.
I went home and raked through my files. Rachel was correct, I did know lots of stories, and many of them had already been written down.
And thus My Vietnam Stories was born.
My Vietnam Stories is an to easy pack and carry e-book.

Ancestors and ATMs
by Paul Rowe
by Paul Rowe
Ancestors and ATMs is an intentionally deeper read than the first book.
I set out to do a study of Vietnamese culture. However, I still wanted short stories.
Rachel again came to the rescue. She suggested that I do a Bill-Bryson-does-Vietnam type of book. Being a Bill Bryson fan I jumped to the challenge.
This book was a lot of fun to write.
While it was heaps of fun to write, I feel that it contains lots of documented NEW knowledge, and is a serious look at Vietnam today. English language books on this topic are difficult to find
.
An underlying theme is that Vietnam has always been misread by outsiders,
and we are still misreading this fascinating country.

Rice and Blood
by Paul Rowe
by Paul Rowe
A work in progress.
Rice and Blood is a history novel. It is an epic saga telling the story of two families spanning 250 years. It is set in old Vietnam; before Vietnam was called Vietnam.
Very few outsiders know anything of this very adventurous and extremely dangerous period.
It is a far cry from anything I have attempted before. But nearly 12 years at uni, more than a decade of living in-country, 100s of interviews, thousands of hours exploring, 100s of books read, and endless chatting to many Vietnamese friends, mean that I have a lot of stuff rattling around in my head which needs to get out.
I am extremely happy with how Rice and Blood is progressing so far.
I am fascinated by the writing process needed to complete such a mammoth task, so I am videoing various stages of the process. Every so often I will blog something about Rice and Blood, then link it to this page. I will then forward it to Facebook. Make sure to follow me so you don't miss any of this excitement and fun.

Serviette doodlings of possible cover designs. (Yes, I do spend a lot of time in coffee shops.)
