Central Vietnam Floods: a photo display
Yesterday, I was in Book Street, Saigon and to my delight there was another photo display by Tran The Phong.
His latest display focusses on the current Vietnam floods.
*
This time of the year central Vietnam is hammered by typhoon season. And because it is unlucky 2020, the floods are far worse than usual.
*
Phong’s compelling photographs manage to capture both the human and the humane sides of the unfolding tragedy.

Central Vietnam has always been considered poor (unlucky), in spite of royalty settling there.
The soil is poor due to regular floods which leach goodness from arable soil.
In the not so distant Indochine past, the stretch between Hue and Quang Tri was that sad place written about by Bernard Fall known as the street without joy.
*
Please note how the Vietnamese are always quick to help others.

My favourite photo.
