Tet 2012 flower boats at Binh Dong wharf.
posted by Paul Rowe, 07/02/2021, HCMC.
It's that time of the year again, when dozens of boats and barges line along Ben Binh Dong (Binh Dong wharf). The wharf (the edge of the canal's road) is alive with colour and excitement. The flowers have come from all over the vast Mekong delta. The flowers will eventually be sold off to families wishing to decorate their homes or business for the Tet season. The majority of the flowers will be for sale on footpaths across Ho Chi Minh City.
The boats display flowers, shrubs, lucky woven-bamboo plants, and bonsai trees.
The colours along the docks are stunning. Yellow, gold, red, pink, and purple are set off against bright blue sky.

Believe it or not, Vietnam's flower displays are very recent additions to the Tet season.. The flower shows initially catered to foreign tourists who wished to see something across Tet. (Tet is a private activity/ies for families, which mainly happen inside the family homes.) However, these days more and more Vietnamese families are making a point of attending the shows.
Check with your hotel staff for the ACTUAL date of the festival. It is based on the Lunar calendar. E.g. in 2021 it was held on the 6 February. Barges can be seen a couple of days either side of the official event.
Show this address to your Grab driver. Tết Bến Bình Đông, Quận 8, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. OR show the map >>. .... If your hotel is in district 5, Cho Lon, and you enjoy walking, the festival is on the other side of the canal. It is on Tau Huu canal. |
Take a hat and your camera. There are plenty of coffee shops and drink stalls. There are also chuas (temples) and shrines along the canal. If you wish to enter a temple make sure to wear long pants, and have covered shoulders.
This is part of Tet, a cultural event. When appropriate join in the fun.
At the flower show, most of the non-boat displays are specifically set up for selfies and photo opportunities.
* HINT * Ask complete strangers to pose with you for some shots.
* HINT * Do NOT board the boats.
Have fun!!
